“Ein Loch ist da, wo etwas nicht ist.
Das Loch ist ein ewiger Kompagnon des Nicht-Lochs: Loch allein kommt nicht vor, so leid es mir tut.“
In this work I have created a dialogue between two materials, porcelain and thread, as an experiment with the idea of evolution.
I was inspired by Kurt Tucholsky’s poem: “Regarding the Philosophic Sociology of the Hole”. I was thinking about origins, about the creation of a thing and the existence of no-thing. Starting with the basic form of a cup, I added holes to experiment and cause mutation and see the effects on the form. Would the existence of holes change the meaning (/genetic code) of the cup, and how? I then added thread to the process--thread, which in its spiraling, extended form resembles DNA and passes through each cup and communicates genetic information from one generation of porcelain form to the next.
